Facilities
The First Apartments is a non-profit residence for adults, 62 years of age and over, built in cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Occupancy is open to all persons regardless of race, religion, sex or national origin.

Situated on landscaped grounds in a west Topeka, KS residential neighborhood, our seven-story community has efficiency and one-bedroom apartments designed for the maximum comfort of residents. Each unit contains wall-to-wall carpeting, blinds, individually-controlled heating/air conditioning, kitchens complete with a range and refrigerator, and cable television.

A spacious solarium, with a large sliding glass door leading to a balcony, complements each floor. Also available is a conveniently located laundry facility with coin-operated washers and dryers, and a beauty salon.

Parking is provided in our large and well-lighted lot.

Security
The security and safety of residents is a major concern of the staff and management of The First Apartments. Emergency buzzers and a doorbell-intercom system to our main entrance are included in every apartment. Entrance doors to the building remain locked at all times. Smoke detectors are also located in each unit and throughout the building.

Activities
An elected resident council shares in the planning of social and recreational events. Our large activity room is used daily for coffees, birthday dinners, entertainment, vespers, educational programs, Wii Bowling, card games and billiards.

A fitness room on the first floor is equipped with stationary bicycles, a rowing machine and other equipment.

Bi-monthly visits by the Topeka/Shawnee County Public Library enable residents to keep current on their reading and check out movies.

A noon meal is made available for those who elect to participate in the activity room.

Transportation is provided for a weekly grocery shopping trip, and Topeka Transit buses stop at The First Apartments' main entrance, giving residents access to the downtown area and other parts of the city.

Cost
The First Apartments is designed to meet the needs of retirees with modest incomes. No entry fees are charged. Our reasonable monthly rent includes utility and maintenance costs.

Federal rent subsidy is available to persons whose annual income and financial assets meet certain government-set requirements. Applicants are encouraged to inquire about the availability of rent subsidy.

Application
Application for residence at The First Apartments can be made at the office, just inside the main entrance. Office hours are from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Or you can download an application from this web site and mail it to the address at the upper left of this page.

Applicants must be in good health, ambulatory and able to care for themselves in such activities as cooking, shopping, housework and laundry.

Income is considered when determining specific rents. A damage deposit equal to one month's rent is required. The deposit is refundable when the apartment is vacated, if the unit is clean and undamaged.

Prior to moving into The First Apartments, residents must sign a Lease Agreement outlining the conditions of residency and pay the damage deposit plus the first month's rent.
